Underwriting writing – Cornell gets $5M for institute

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will honor the alma mater of one of its namesakes with a $5 million grant to strengthen the discipline to that won him renown as a journalist.

The foundation is making the gift to Cornell University to expand its John S. Knight Writing Program into the Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines.

The program was endowed by the foundation in 1986 to honor Knight, a Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and newspaper executive. The program focuses on writing to strengthen teaching and learning in all disciplines.

The foundation’s new gift will support expansion of the program over the next three years by developing a sophomore writing seminar; integrating writing into students’ residential lives; building technology into the administration of the program and the assessment of student work; and outreach to other colleges and universities.
