  • Area Churches Together Serving, Aiken, SC, awarded President Clinton’s Points of Light honor for their efforts to care for the needs of the homeless and low-income families in the area.
  • Council of Michigan Foundations, Grand Haven, MI, awarded $24,500 by Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Flint, MI, to plan a high-school textbook on US philanthropy.
  • Alley Theatre, Houston, TX, granted $50,000 by American Express, New York, NY, to fund programs to attract Hispanic audiences to the theatre, including the creation of a Spanish language web site.
  • Markle Foundation, New York, NY, has committed $845,000 over the next two years to a fellowship program to support writers examining the effects of information technology on society. Individual fellowships will range from $40,000 to $75,000 and will last for one year.
  • S. Ann Castle of Slate, Redmond, WA, died at the age of 48 on February 22. Ms. Castle compiled the “Slate 60: Philanthropic List” each quarter and served as a consultant to the United Nations Foundation.
