Banking on charity – Bank foundation’s giving grows

 |

In 1999 the Union Bank of California Foundation contributed $8.24 million to charities in California, Oregon, Washington and New York.

The foundation’s philanthropy represents a 19 percent increase over the previous year.

“We are pleased to help support the work of organizations that are transforming lives and communities through volunteer efforts and contributions,” Carl Ballton, the foundation’s president, said in a written statement.

Grants were made to organizations working in seven target areas: health and human services, education, community economic development, affordable housing, culture and the arts, the environment and emergency services such as the Red Cross.

Every request for funding is evaluated by regional committees of employees from all levels of the bank.

Based in San Francisco, UnionBanCal Corporation is a bank holding company with assets of $33.7 billion as of Dec. 31, 1999.
