Writers boost library – Effort part of larger campaign

 |

Three prominent writers are leading a campaign to raise money for the restoration and expansion of the Berkeley Public Library.

Novelists Alice Walker and Amy Tan and journalist Elizabeth Farnsworth are working with the Berkeley Public Library Foundation in a drive they hope will raise $3.7 million for furniture and computer equipment.

The library is undergoing a $30 million renovation that will more than double its size when it reopens next year.

A bond measure approved by Berkeley voters in 1996 is paying for the expansion and seismic retrofitting, but cannot be used for interior furnishings, the foundation says.

The foundation has raised $2.2 million so far.
