Sammy Sosa’s charitable foundation in the Dominican Republic is near bankruptcy – and he has given it very little cash, The Associated Press reports.
Sosa has donated little more than a building valued at $2.7 million to
the foundation, reports Fortune magazine, which estimates the building earned him a tax deduction of at least $1 million.
Sosa’s rival Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals reportedly has given $100,000 to the foundation.
The magazine also reports that the foundation’s building houses many tenants who don’t pay rent – like Sosa’s sisters, who run a boutique and disco in the building.
The foundation innoculates children, educates young mothers, and provides dental care.
Sosa’s agent Adam Katz said, “I can virtually assure you that there has been no impropriety.”
