Relief upgrade – Disaster relief site gets boost

Several high-tech firms have teamed up to improve a Web site that helps relief agencies reach people in need faster and more efficiently.

Sun Microsystems and several other companies have donated hardware, software, design and development to strengthen AlertNet, which was established by the Reuters Foundation in 1997.

Foundation Deputy Director Maureen Marlowe said the charity also would set up a new rapid-response fund to help cover essential services in the immediate aftermath of disasters.

More than 100 relief organizations already use the site, which provides news and information on humanitarian disasters and a place where aid groups can coordinate efforts.
