Online registration – Service sees convention ‘bump’

 |

Americans can now register to vote online, thanks to a new nonprofit Web site.

BeAVoter.org, which is sponsored by the American Association of Retired People, America Online, and WorldCom, Inc., has registered more than 55,000 people to date. The registration rate has jumped sharply since the Republican Convention started.

Visitors to the site select their home state and fill out the corresponding online form. A paper copy of the form, along with a pre-addressed envelope, is then mailed to the visitor’s home to be signed and sent in.

In order to vote in November, voters must register before their individual state deadlines, which range from October 8 to November 7. Sponsors have been working to persuade other civic, political and interest groups to link their sites to BeAVoter.org and encourage their members to register.
