$40M for Special Olympics – Will fund training, competitions

 |
Special Olympics, Inc. will partner with SBC Wireless to raise $40 million over the next four years through individual $20 donations.

To start the campaign, SBC Wireless is holding a “Be a Hero” promotion, which will give a free wireless phone to consumers who choose an SBC Wireless phone service and donate $20 to the Special Olympics.

The campaign is the first nationwide, long-term fundraising effort for the American Special Olympics Team. The money raised will be used for year-round sports training and competitions for Special Olympics athletes, who participate in the activities free of charge. The funds will also help send the team to the Special Olympics 2001 World Winter Games in Alaska and 2003 World Summer Games in Ireland.
