$3M for cathedral – Renovations in works

 |

San Antonio-based SBC, the largest local phone company in the U.S., will donate $3 million toward the $15 million restoration and expansion project at the San Fernando Cathedral, The Dallas Morning News reported Aug. 16.

With SBC’s donation, the Archdiocese of San Antonio has raised over half the money necessary to restore the 262 year-old church, the oldest Catholic cathedral in the U.S, and build a community center, museum, gift shop and cafeteria, said The Rev. David Garcia, the cathedral’s rector.

SBC Chairman Edward Whitacre Jr. heads the fundraising effort.
