$20M for cancer research – Largest gift ever

The University of Virginia School of Medicine has received $20 million from the estate of the late Paul Mellon to fund prostate cancer research.

The gift, the largest in the medical school’s history, stems from Mellon’s gratitude for the treatment he received at the school’s Cancer Center and the strength of the center’s prostate cancer program, according to estate executors. The gift will be used to establish the Mellon Prostate Cancer Research Institute.
