Engineering women – Focus on scholarships, facilities

The first engineering program at a women’s college has received $2.5 million from Ford Motor Co.

The five-year grant is the largest to date for the Picker Program in Engineering and Technology at Smith College in Massachusetts. With the gift, Ford aims to increase the number of women entering the field of engineering.

The grant will help fund scholarships, a video-conferencing facility and library acquisitions for.  After a year of promotion and marketing, the college plans to name four Ford Scholars a year beginning in fall 2001. Each recipient will receive full scholarship to Smith and a laptop computer.
