$1B postal relief – Clinton signs measure

 |

Nonprofit mailers are set to get $1 billion in postal relief, thanks to legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, The Nonprofit Times reported in its Nov. 1 issue.

The legislation is designed to protect preferred postal rates for nonprofits and was drafted in negotiations between groups that include the U.S. Postal Service, Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers and Direct Marketing Association.

President Clinton signed the legislation into law on Oct. 27.

Under the new law, the price of nonprofit Standard A-Class mail will be discounted 40 percent off the commercial rate and nonprofit periodicals will be reduced 5 percent. The Postal Rate Commission will implement new rates in early 2001.
