Endowment unveiled – Kept secret for years

 |

After years of keeping a $12.8 million endowment under wraps, officials at the University of Texas at Austin say the endowment has grown to $30 million, the Dallas Morning News reported Nov. 5.

The endowment was a gift of Sybil Harrington, one of Texas’ greatest benefactors, in honor of her late husband, oil tycoon Don Harrington.

Mrs. Harrington requested that her gift be kept a secret until she died and that the money be kept in trust until it reached $25 million. She died in 1998.

With the endowment, the university has established the Harrington Fellows Program for faculty and graduate students. The fellowships will be awarded to 16 graduate students and 4 faculty members beginning in fall 2001.
