Over the top – Giving grows 5.5 percent

 |

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The United Way of Greater Greensboro raised a record-high $15,252,800 in its annual fall campaign, beating its goal by $2,800 and exceeding the total raised last year by 5.5 percent.

Two companies – Lorillard Tobacco Co. and Jefferson-Pilot Corp. – each gave more than $500,000 in combined employee and corporate contributions.

Williams Corp., a global energy and communications firm based in Tulsa, Okla., with operations in Greensboro and Stokesdale, made a corporate gift of $200,700 based on sponsorships from a cross-country bicycle trip by employees.

The campaign – the eighth straight in which the United Way has met its goal – was chaired by Charles E. McQueary, president of General Dynamics Advanced Technology Systems.
