The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has created the largest scholarship program in Washington State with a $100 million gift to help low-income students go to college, the Associated Press reported Jan. 4.
The Washington State Achievers Program will award 500 four-year scholarships a year to colleges and universities in the state. The program will select scholarship recipients from schools serving low-income students.
The foundation plans to choose 10 to 15 schools throughout the state for the program this spring. Public high schools with more than 100 students are eligible if at least 20 percent of their students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
