Zoo charity – Expanding programs

The Philadelphia Zoo and the Academy of Natural Sciences each has received bequests valued at $7 million from the estate of former Philadelphia philanthropist, Florence Foerderer.

The money allocated to the zoo from the estate of Foerderer, who died in 1999, is the largest single gift in its 127-year history.

The $7 million will endow the current Children’s Zoo and its planned replacement.

The Philadelphia Zoo, the nation’s first zoo, plans to improve its current programs and upgrade its facilities within the next four years.
