$8.9M for schools – Three-year grant

A national effort to ensure that state laws and policies strengthen the ability of superintendents and principals to improve student learning will be the focus of a three-year, $8.9 million grant from the Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund to the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The council, based in Washington, D.C., will head the State Action for Education Leadership Project, a new national consortium that includes the council and also the National Governors’ Association, National  Conference of State Legislatures, National Association of State Boards of Education and Education Commission of the States.

The project will solicit reform proposals from all 50 states early this year. An independent panel will review the proposals and recommend planning grants of up to $50,000 each, and subsequent grants of $250,000 each to put the plans into effect in up to 15 states.
