Lands’ End giving – $130M Chicago facility

The University of Chicago has received $21 million from Gary C. Comer, founder of the Lands’ End clothing-catalog firm, and his wife, Frances.

The gift will help finance the $130 million Comer Children’s Hospital that the school will begin building this fall, with completion scheduled for early in 2003.

The gift matches the largest donation every to the University of Chicago Hospitals – and the fourth-largest naming gift ever to a children’s hospital in the U.S.

The 242,000-square-foot, seven-story facility will have 155 beds.
