Fidelity surges – Among top U.S. charities

The Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund has handed out more than $2 billion in grants since it created the donor-advised fund in 1992.

Grants on behalf of donors to the fund totaled $700 million in 2000, Fidelity says.

More than 26,000 donors contributed $1.2 billion to the fund in 2000, bringing total contributions to $4 billion since the fund was created.

Fidelity says it is $2.6 billion-asset Charitable Gift Fund is the fifth-largest public charity in the U.S. and the biggest grantmaker.

The fund has supported 58,000 charities since it was created.
