The three-year Carolina effort already has raised $9.9 million, while the national drive already has raised $654 million.

Former First Union CEO Ed Crutchfield is co-chair of the campaign, which has received a $2 million challenge grant from Fred and Alice Stanback of Salisbury; $1 million from the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation in Houston; $750,000 from the First Union Foundation; and $750,000 from CP&L.
