Boosting women’s health – 20-county region

 |

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sara Lee Corp. is giving $5 million to Forsyth Medical Center Foundation to expand health services for women and girls.

The new Sara Lee Center for Women’s Health at Forsyth Medical Center will serve 20 counties in northwest North Carolina, including new preventive and wellness programs.

The gift will have a big impact on Sara Lee’s corporate philanthropy in the Winston-Salem area, where the company employs nearly 6,000 people.

Sara Lee’s annual giving in the region has ranged from $1.5 million to $2 million in recent years.

In the wake of the gift, the company is reviewing its overall philanthropic program, says Peggy Carter, vice president for corporate affairs at Sara Lee Branded Apparel.

“We have been focused on programs that promote the acceptance of diversity in our community,” she says. “I suspect that will still be a core interest of ours.”

Sara Lee also has named Cathy Jones, formerly a direct-operations consumer services representative serving retail and outlet stories and at-home shopping, as its new contributions assistant.
