Alabama windfall – Perpetual trust

Lucille Beeson, a lawyer, philanthropist and antiques dealer in Birmingham, Ala., has left an estate of more than $150 million to 13 local charities, the Associated Press reported May 13.

The gift, believed to be one of the largest individual bequests in the U.S. in years, is expected to be set up as a perpetual trust administered by AmSouth Bank.

Beeson died in January at 95. Her husband, who died in 1985, was an executive at Liberty National Life Insurance Co., which later became Torchmark Corp.
