Meningitis fight – 20 countries hit

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is giving $70 million over 10 years to develop a vaccine to end meningitis in Africa, the Associated Press reported May 30.

The grant will pay to create the Meningitis Vaccine Project, an alliance of public and private groups that include the World Health Organization.

The alliance aims to develop and distribute a vaccine against a strain of the disease that afflicts a “meningitis belt” of 20 African countries.
