Financier George Soros says he may rethink his investments and philanthropy in Russia because of an apparent tightening of control over academic freedom, the Associated Press reported June 5.
Soros characterized as “basically a return to the Soviet system” the recent order by the Russian Academy of Sciences limiting foreign contacts by hundreds of affiliated institutions.
With such an order, he said, he would have not been “willing or able” to spend the more than $100 million he has invested to support Russian science.
If Russia returns to the closed practices of the Soviet Union, he said, he likely will end his investments in the country, AP said.
