Peace Corps chief – Former police officer

 |

President Bush named Gaddi Vasquez, public affairs vice president for public affairs at Southern California Edison Co., as director of the Peace Corps., the Associated Press reported July 25.

Vasquez, a former police officer, was California’s highest ranking Hispanic Republican when he served as county supervisor for Orange County from 1987 to 1995.

He resigned the post after the county’s investment pool lost nearly $1.7 billion and the county had to file for bankruptcy in 1994.

Vasquez succeeds acting director Charles R. Baquet III heading the corps, which sends 7,000 volunteers to 78 developing countries.
