Teens and faith – $3.96M from Lilly

 |

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The influence of religion and spirituality in the life of teenagers will be the focus of a five-year study to be conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and funded by a $3.96 million grant from the Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis.

The study, which UNC says will be the first comprehensive national survey on the topic, will include a random-sample phone survey of nearly 4,000 youngsters and parents, including in-depth personal interviews with 350 participants.

“We have every reason to believe that religion is an important influence in the lives of youth in many ways,” says Christian S. Smith, a UNC sociology professor and principal investigator for the project.
