U.S./world – Canadian giving – $5.4B for charity

A new study says charitable donations by Canadians grew 9.2 percent in 2000 to $5.4 billion, The Toronto Star reported Nov. 27.

The number of people reporting charitable donations grew 2.3 percent to 5.5 million after falling slightly in 1999, according to the study by Statistics Canada.

The median donation – meaning half the donations were greater and half were smaller — was $190 in 2000, up 2.8 percent from 1999.
