The YMCAs in Durham and Raleigh have agreed to merge, creating what they say will be the biggest community service organization in the Triangle.
The deal was signed May 1, and the two Ys could complete a merger plan as early as July and form what tentatively would be called YMCA of the Triangle Area.
Doug McMillan, CEO of the Capital Area YMCA in Raleigh, would be CEO of the merged group.
The Raleigh and Durham Ys have been talking about a merger for two years, and volunteer groups for both organizations last summer began scrutinizing one another’s operations, finances, property, programs and staffing.
Both groups also teamed up last fall, along with the Garner Road Family YMCA in Raleigh, for their first-ever joint annual fund drive.
The drive nearly met its combined goal of $2.4 million, with the Capital Area Y raising nearly $2.1 million, exceeding is $2.01 million goal.
Serving Wake, Johnston, Lee and Pamlico counties with four full-facility branches, four program branches and two camps, the Capital Area Y has an annual budget of $40 million, employs 316 people fulltime and 1,675 part-time
It has 14,000 members and their families, and serves more than 66,000 individuals, including more than 38,000 youngsters.
The Durham Y has a budget of $5 million and employs 100 fulltime and 300 to 400 part-time. With two full-facility branches and a camp, it has more than 3,500 members and their families, and serves 18,000 youngsters a year.
Dorothy Brown, associated director of marketing and communications for the Capital Area Y, says the merger is not expected to result in any staff reductions.
