RALEIGH, N.C. — Roughly 40 youngsters at risk of dropping out of school have launched a year-long drive to raise one million pennies — $10,000 – to support after-school programs they receive through Loaves and Fishes in Raleigh.
The Stewards Fund, a $39 million-asset family foundation in Raleigh that focuses on basic human needs, has agreed to match all funds generated through July 15, 2002.
Children ages 5 through 18 hope by then to have collected at least 200,000 pennies, or $2,000.
Chris Decker, a Loaves and Fishes board member and systems developer at SAS Institute in Cary, is overseeing the drive.
