Lakes focus of drive

The Yadkin-Pee Dee Lakes Project has launched a $1.8 million fund drive to finance a plan to boost economic development in the seven-county area along the Yadkin, Pee Dee, Rocky and Uwharrie river basins of the Piedmont.

The group aims to spur creation of small outdoor businesses related to recreation to offset job losses in the region and promote it as a tourism destination.

David Jones, director of the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, is chairman of the project, which serves Davidson, Rowan, Stanly, Anson, Richmond, Montgomery and Randolph counties.
