Duke taps historian

DURHAM, N.C. — John Hope Franklin, James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University, has been elected vice chairman of the board of trustees of The Duke Endowment.

He succeeds Louis C. Stephens Jr., retired president and CEO of Pilot Life Insurance in Greensboro, who is retiring from the board after 21 years.

Franklin received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in 1995.
