FTC targets fraud

 |

The Federal Trade Commission recently launched “Operation Phoney Philanthropy” with the help of 34 states, GuideStar and the Wise Giving Alliance.

The law-enforcement and public-education campaign aims to stop fraudulent telephone fundraising and to teach people how to question phone solicitors.

Many fraudulent solicitors claim they are collecting funds for popular charities such as firefighter, police, veteran or terminally-ill-children programs, hurting legitimate charities competing for the same donations, the FTC says.
