Giving to Duke grows

 |

Duke University received $296.8 million in charitable gifts in 2002-03, posting its second-best fundraising year ever.

Over 84,000 people, half of them alumni, made contributions.

The Duke Endowment in Charlotte gave about $42.4 million, the school’s largest single donation of the year.

Giving grew $32 million, or 12.2 percent, over the previous year, but fell short of the record $300 million given in 1999-2000.

Much of the money will support science and engineering, promoting diversity, supporting faculty and expanding Duke’s local and international reach.
