Nonprofit leader dies

 |

Judith O’Connor, former president and CEO of BoardSource in Washington, D.C., died of cancer Sept.1.

During her six-year tenure at BoardSource, formerly known as the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, she helped launch an effort to find new ideas and practices for nonprofit board governance, and was named one of the 50 most influential nonprofit leaders by The NonProfit Times in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Before joining BoardSource, she was executive director of Very Special Arts and chief operating officer of the Council on Foundations, both in Washington, D.C.

“It was her gentle strength that shall remain the hallmark of Judy’s tenure here,” BoardSource said in a statement. “Whether addressing a community leader, a funder or a staff member, Judy exhibited a remarkable ability to connect with people.”
