Shepard to succeed retiring Piva as Duke’s development chief.

DURHAM, N.C., [02.23.04] — Robert S. Shepard will become chief alumni and development officer at Duke University starting July 1.

John J. Piva, who has served as Duke’s chief development officer since 1982, is retiring.

As the head of Duke’s Office of University Development for nine years, Shepard has helped run the eight-year, $2.36 billion Campaign for Duke.

During Piva’s tenure, Duke has raised $3.5 billion.

The Campaign for Duke, which ended in December 2003, is the school’s largest fundraising campaign ever, and the fifth-largest among higher-education institutions in the U.S.

Prior to Duke, Shepard worked at the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
