Philanthropy can be good for business, a new survey says.

More than nine in 10 Americans believe it is important for companies to provide charitable support to nonprofits, and more than seven in 10 employees prefer to work for philanthropic firms, assuming factors like pay and location are the same, says the survey by Deloitte & Touche USA.

The firm released the survey before its “IMPACT Day,” dedicated to volunteering, which it says it is encouraging among its 30,000 employees.

Other findings:

* Nearly nine in 10 Americans believe it is important for companies to provide employees with volunteer opportunities.

* Nearly three in four Americans say opportunities to volunteer through the workplace improve community well-being.

* More than six in 10 Americans say such opportunities communicate a company’s values.

* Nearly six in 10 Americans believe workplace volunteer opportunities lift morale.

The global professional services firm estimated its employees would donate nearly 250,000 volunteer hours to local nonprofits during its IMPACT Day on October 8.
