Elkin fund growing

 |

By Todd Cohen

ELKIN, N.C. — An effort to increase to $150,000 from $50,000 an endowment that makes annual grants to nonprofits in the Elkin area that includes parts of Wilkes, Yadkin and Surry counties has raised nearly $57,000 through a matching grant, and has received another $30,000 from the Hillsdale Foundation in Greensboro.

The Winston-Salem Foundation, which houses the Elkin Community Trust, offered in September 2003 to match $1 for every $4 the community raised for the endowment through September 2005, an effort that so far has generated more than $14,000 in matching funds.

To meet its goal of raising $100,000 over two years, including the  Hillsdale grant and the remaining dollars in the matching grant, the endowment needs to raise just over $23,000 more from the community.

For information, call the Winston-Salem Foundation at 336.725.2383 or Elkin Mayor Tom Gwyn, who chairs an advisory committee for the endowment, at 336.835.4799.
