Electronic filing

 |

Nonprofits now can file their 990 information returns for this year using a new, free website.

The National Center for Charitable Statistics, a program of the Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy, launched “990-Online” in early February to provide easier, more accurate filing for tax-exempt groups.

The site will provide about 50 standard attachments, links to IRS instructions and tips from accountants who work with nonprofits, automatic calculations and will verify the accuracy of the return, the center says.

More than 450,000 nonprofits filed paper 990 returns last year, the center says, and the IRS is requiring that certain tax-exempt groups file electronically beginning in 2006.
