Tsunami funds sufficient

 |

The American Red Cross has raised $297.4 million for tsunami relief efforts in South Asia, an amount the organization says is sufficient to meet projected need in the devastated region over the next decade.

Much of that total, however, represents pledges, and the Red Cross urges those who have promised funds to fulfill their pledges.

Overall, $1.2 billion has been donated or pledged to Red Cross and Red Crescent societies throughout the world.

The Greater Carolinas Chapter of the Red Cross, representing Mecklenburg and Iredell Counties, raised more than $1 million for tsunami relief from area residents and businesses.
