Volunteer worth

 |

The value of an hour of volunteered time increased to $17.55 last year, up from $17.19 in 2003, a coalition of nonprofits says.

Independent Sector estimates that, based on the number of hours volunteered last year, American donated the equivalent of roughly $22 billion in service hours.

Independent Sector calculated the number based on the average hourly wage for all non-management and non-agricultural workers, and added 12 percent to cover fringe benefits.

The group says nonprofits can use the number to quantify the value volunteers bring to their organizations.
