Marylanders generous

 |

Maryland is one of the most generous states, and as incomes rise, giving is keeping pace, a new study says.

More than three-quarters of charitable giving in the state, about $4.1 billion, came from individuals, representing about 3 percent of their gross adjusted income, says the study, “State of Individual Giving in Maryland – 2005,” which was released by the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers and analyzes data from 2002.

In 2002, Maryland was the fifth-wealthiest state in the U.S. and ranked seventh in charitable giving based on percentage of income.

Foundations represented 11 percent of all charitable giving, the study says, while individual bequests accounted for 7.5 percent and corporate giving made up 5 percent.
