Advocate for children’s health dies

The children of North Carolina have lost an advocate.

Laura Oberkircher, executive director of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Children Coalition of Wake County, died June 22 of breast cancer, the News & Observer reported June 24.

Oberkircher worked for the coalition for 11 years, the newspaper reported, adding programs like teen pregnancy awareness, substance abuse prevention and teen summer camps, and served as the group’s head since 1997.

“Laura was on a crusade to make the world a better place,” her husband, Tyrone Everett, told the newspaper.  “She was always fixing the world.”

Her death came within two weeks of the loss of two other champions of the state’s underserved populations.

Jim Bernstein, a state employee and advocate for rural healthcare, died June 12, and Deborah Greenblatt, head of Carolina Legal Assistance and advocate for people with disabilities, died June 13.
