The North Carolina Association of Educators is holding a series of forums across the state on the issue of school suspensions.
Called Solutions to School Suspensions, the “brainstorming sessions” are designed to share ideas about dealing with behaviors and attitudes that lead to disruptive students and ultimately suspensions and expulsions.
The goal of the forums is to find ways to reduce overall suspensions, reduce suspensions of minority students, find ways to foster cultural appreciation among educators and find alternatives to disruptive student behaviors.
The association, based in Raleigh, is inviting students, parents, educators, community leaders and faith leaders to participate in the discussions free of charge.
The first sessions were held in Durham, Elizabeth City, Wilmington and Statesville in July and early August.
The four remaining meetings will be held during August:
- Aug. 9: Fayetteville
- Aug. 16: Greensboro
- Aug. 20: Asheville
- Aug. 23: Shelby
