Duke University raised $341.9 million during fiscal 2006, more than in any previous year, the school says.
Donations came from almost 96,000 donors, with The Duke Endowment contributing about $53.6 million in the year ended June 30.
More than a third of the 41,000 alumni who contributed did so in the year’s fourth quarter, which began April 1, shortly after Duke lacrosse team members were accused of raping a dancer hired for a party held March 13 at a house rented by team members.
Three team members were arrested in connection with the scandal, but none have gone to trial yet.
Duke’s annual fund exceeded its goal, raising a record $25.4 million from 44,000 supporters.
Contributions from The Duke Endowment, based in Charlotte, will support scholarships and academic and community outreach programs.
In October, the funder pledged $75 million over three years to the school for financial aid endowment.
