To the editor,
As I read Katy Harriger’s opinion related to the need for civic engagement [“Civic engagement needs a boost”, 11.06.06], I wondered if one of the following two theories could be proven:
Did the exponential increase in nonprofits over the past few decades cause the lack of civic engagement?
Or did the futility of the discourse in the civic (governmental) sector cause the increase in nonprofits?
With so many strong commmunity leaders engaged in the nonprofit sector either as staff, volunteers or board members, we may have inadvertently drawn away from the civic (government) sector the voices that used to be heard there.
