Almost six million donors contributed a record total of $7.9 billion to charity last year, a new study says.
That’s an increase of almost 14 percent over 2004, led by Alberta’s 21.1 percent jump, says the report by Statistics Canada.
The number of overall donors in Canada rose a slight 0.9 percent, but increased by almost 9 percent in the Yukon.
One in four taxpayers claimed charitable donation in 2005, with a median donation of $240, compared to $230 the previous year, the study says.
Nunavut eclipsed other provinces and territories with a median donation of $400 but, among metropolitan areas, taxpayers in Abbotsford, B.C., led the way with a median of $560.
