Morehead Foundation gets $100 million

 |

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Morehead Scholars program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will increase the number of full scholarships awarded and expand its summer enrichment program thanks to a $100 million gift from the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation.

The program will be renamed Morehead-Cain in recognition of the gift.

The Morehead program, which has awarded $116 million in scholarships since it was created in 1951, provides full scholarships to about 50 students each year and funds four summer enrichment programs for its scholars during their undergraduate years.

Mary Cain and her husband, Gordon, a Conoco executive and entrepreneur who died in 2002, created the Houston-based Cain Foundation in 1988.
