 |

The nation’s nonprofit sector grew to include more than one million charities as of Sept. 30 of last year, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported.

The number of 501(c)3 tax-exempt organizations registered with the IRS rose 1.7 percent from 2005, and grew almost 63 percent over the last 10 years.

Last year’s growth rate was slower than in previous years, which saw increases of 3.5 percent from 2004 to 2005 and 4.8 percent from 2003 to 2004.

The number of private foundations grew by 1.4 percent during the year ended Sept. 30, 2006.

The data were published by the IRS in its Data Book 2006.
