Funds formed in wake of Virginia Tech tragedy

 |

Less than a week after a gunman opened fire on the campus of Virginia Tech, killing 33 faculty and students, at least three funds were established at community foundations to manage donations.

In Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech, The Community Foundation of the New River Valley created the 4-16-07 Fund and is in the process of convening area nonprofits to focus on the long-term impact of the shooting.

The Foundation for the Roanoke Valley created the School Violence Assistance Fund, started with an anonymous donation, to provide assistance to victims and their families, with priority given to those affected by the tragedy.

And the Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia established the VT Remembrance Fund for Student Safety, which will assist the Virginia Tech community and support programs aiming to increase safety at Virginia campuses.
