Online giving surges

 |

Americans donated about $6.87 billion online last year, an increase of more than half over 2005, and just over half of the $13.2 billion raised online worldwide, a new report says.

The sharp increase was driven by individuals’ growing use of the Internet for both general giving and disaster-related donation, says the ePhilanthropy Foundation, and both small and large nonprofits saw dramatic increases in online fundraising.

In a separate survey conducted by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, 187 of the largest U.S. charities saw their online fundraising rise 37 percent in 2006 to a total of $1.2 billion.
